Tales of travel to and from the Denmark area

 

 

We got an inquiry on our web site, www.bigblackcreekhistorical.com from a man working in

China, his name is Jay Pratt. He is doing a study on Dr. T. P. Crawford and his wife Martha Crawford, Southern Baptist Missionaries for fifty years in China and Lottie Moon's team leader.  Dr. Crawford lived in Denmark, Tennessee at the Peter Cayle farm and attended the Denmark Male Academy...he then went on to Union University, graduated Summa Cum Laude (then in Murfreesboro, TN.) He was ordained and sent out by the Big Black Creek Baptist Church and the Big Hatchie Baptist Association, which was formed at the Big Black Creek Baptist Church by our friend Obadiah Dodson, who helped form the Louisiana Baptist Convention and a pastor of The Big Black Creek Baptist Church.  Dr and Mrs. Crawford were appointed by  the West Tennessee Baptist Convention in April 1851 and left for China.  Mrs. Crawford ran the Boy's School in China with Miss Lottie Moon, the most famous Baptist Missionary and for whom the Christmas Mission Offering of Baptist is named. What a find for Denmark, TN and the Big Black Creek Historical Association.
